1.2 Project Overview
The development project on Burnaby Mountain comprises enormous scope and
affects a wide area beyond the Ring Road. Factors such as transportation,
environmental, and social amenities are not bounded by the division between
campus property and the City
of Burnaby. With this in mind, the project team chose to study the
Burnaby Mountain Project in two separate scales, inside the Ring Road,
and the Surrounding Area.
The Ring Road team examined the following,
-
bio-environmental factors including
significant trees, riparian zones and salmonid
bearing waterways
-
physical geography such as surficial
geography, slope aspect, watershed drainage and internal soil drainage,
-
impact analysis of concept plans from
two competing firms in the February 28th, 2000 Design Charette hosted by
the BMCC.
The Surrounding Area team examined transportation routes and service facilities
serving the University development region. Coverages were created consisting
of:
-
rush hour traffic patterns to and from
Burnaby Mountain, and in the surrounding area
-
cycling times around the City
of Burnaby
-
service areas for social amenities and
emergency services.
